It is the color and variety of gemstones that have made them a jewelry wardrobe staple throughout the history of jewelry design. The rare and elusive search for the perfect gemstones has led us around the world to source gemstones with just the right characteristics. Many designer jewelry manufacturers are looking for gemstones with a certain grade, cut, or number of inclusions. At Relios, we embrace naturally included stones for that very aesthetic that other jewelry designers reject - and it is this way that we create so many unique and bold styles. We do not grade our gemstones by karat weight or number of inclusions, but they do go through a strict quality control process to maintain consistent size, color range, and variability. Most of our gemstones are cut overseas to our design specifications by international stone cutters. They are then sent to us in Albuquerque, NM, USA where they are set or strung by our team of diverse craftspeople.

Part of the allure of natural gemstones is the uniqueness of each stone - no two are just alike. Our design process takes advantage of the characteristics of the gemstones to enchance their natural beauty. Another captivating quality that is unique to natural gemstones is that they warm when you wear them - the body heat produced by the wearer extends to the gemstone. There is a wonderful weight and presence to natural gemstones that make them so enjoyable to wear - plastic or man-made materials could never replace them as part of your everday style.

Relios jewelry undergoes rigorous testing by the Gemological Institute of America to ensure our customers always receive high quality natural gemstones. Visit the GIA's website and learn about their strict standards of acceptability.

Some of our favorite gemstones include rhodonite, tiger's eye, turquoise, and lapis - although many other gemstones are featured in all their natural glory.

Rhodonite The gemstone pink rhodonite comes in a variety of shades, and this gemstone's organic feeling and natural characteristics make it a wonderful accompaniment to the casual jewelry designs you will find throughout our website. The warmth of pink gemstones is featured prominently in the gemstone jewelry designs of our Rodeo Romance Collection by Carolyn Pollack. Mined in Spain, Russia, Sweden, and Germany, rhodonite with its dusty rose pink color, promotes a sense of inner calm, self-worth, peace, happiness, joy, and laughter. Used in smoothing over relationship difficulties, rhodonite clears the mind of confusion and doubt, while helping to achieve one's greatest potential. It is also believed to strengthen the inner ear, allowing one to become more open to "hearing" the truth and aiding speech and hearing problems, making rhodonite an excellent stone for children with learning disabilities. Massachusetts celebrates rhodonite as it's state gemstone.

The natural gemstone tiger's eye, with its rich amber color and luminous golden and chocolate bands, is named for its resemblance to the eye of a tiger. However, the gemstone also occurs in unique colors like pink, blue, and red. Due to its ocular appearance, ancient Roman soldiers thought the stone could see all danger and wore it for protection in battle. Today, the stone is believed to generate a positive attitude, flexibility, courage, and confidence. One variety of this gemstone, pietersite, features a combination of these luminous hues and can be found within our Taos Collection by Carolyn Pollack.

Native Americans prized the gemstone turquoise, the heart of Southwestern tradition, as currency, as a talisman of good health, and most importantly as beautiful jewelry. They believed that turquoise gemstones stole their color from the sky, and when the wind blows, it is searching for the "sky stone". The huge range of hues makes turquoise a popular design element and its versatility is featured throughout our selection, but most prominently in the Scottsdale Collection by Carolyn Pollack. View our selection of turquoise gemstone jewelry.

Turquoise varies widely in color and appearance, due to the mineral content in each particular vein of turquoise. A higher copper content results in bluer turquoise. A higher content of iron will produce turquoise greener in color. Likewise, the variations in the matrix or the pattern inside a piece of turquoise, is created by the minerals trapped in the turquoise deposit before it hardened. Each matrix pattern is unique, mother nature's individual fingerprint on each stone. Remember this about the turquoise used in Relios jewelry; it is only genuine gem quality natural turquoise.

Lapis lazuli and denim lapis are two favorite gemstones that are often incorporated in our designs. One of the first gemstones to ever be used and worn for jewelry, lazuli lapis was celebrated as a magical and holy gemstone by ancient peoples who believed that the gemstone was laced with flecks of gold. The deep blue gemstone's sparkles of gold are actually inclusions of Pyrite, a brassy, gold mineral often called "Fool's Gold". True gold or not, the brilliant sparkle of Pyrite lends itself as a beautiful feature to this popular gemstone. Denim lapis gemstones are a paler blue variety of lapis lazuli. As its name suggests, denim lapis resembles the color of denim due to greater calcite content than that of lazuli. The rugged individualism our designers and customers find within these gemstones make a favorite for everyday - just like well-worn jeans can always be counted on to fit, lapis gemstones pair beautifully with any wardrobe piece - from pastels to bright, bold colors, neutrals, and of course denim. Some remarkable examples of designer jewelry featuring lapis gemstones can be found in our Southwest Blues Collection by Carolyn Pollack.
